12 AWG wire is rated for 20-amp circuits and 10 AWG wire is rated for 30-amp circuits per NEC Table 310.16 for copper conductors in residential applications. The decision is simple: use 12 gauge wire on any circuit protected by a 20-amp breaker, and use 10 gauge wire on any circuit protected by a 30-amp breaker. Installing 12 gauge wire on a 30-amp breaker is a code violation and a fire hazard because the breaker allows 30 amps to flow through wire that can only safely carry 20 amps before overheating.
Physical Difference Between 12 and 10 AWG
10 AWG wire has a larger copper conductor cross-section than 12 AWG. The 10 AWG bare conductor measures approximately 0.102 inches in diameter versus 0.081 inches for 12 AWG. This size difference is immediately visible and tactile when handling the two cable sizes side by side. 10/2 NM-B cable is stiffer and heavier than 12/2 NM-B, which makes it slightly harder to pull through drilled studs, bend inside junction boxes, and terminate at outlets and panel lugs. Budget a few extra minutes per termination when switching from 12 AWG to 10 AWG work on the same project.
Where 12 AWG Is Required
The NEC mandates 12 AWG wire on 20-amp circuits for kitchen countertop receptacles (at least two dedicated 20-amp circuits per NEC 210.11(C)(1)), bathroom receptacles (one dedicated 20-amp circuit per NEC 210.11(C)(3)), garage receptacles, outdoor receptacles, laundry room receptacles for the washing machine, and the dishwasher circuit. General-purpose bedroom, living room, and hallway outlet circuits that do not have a specific 20-amp code requirement may use 14 AWG on 15-amp breakers, but many electricians run 12 AWG throughout for consistency and future circuit upgrade flexibility.
Where 10 AWG Is Required
10 AWG wire on a 30-amp breaker is required for electric dryer circuits (10/3 NM-B for new 4-wire installations), electric water heater circuits (10/2 NM-B), 30-amp Level 2 EV charger circuits, window or ductless AC disconnect feeds rated at 30 amps, and hot tub or spa sub-feeds where the equipment nameplate specifies a 30-amp circuit. Any appliance or equipment that requires a 30-amp circuit on its nameplate mandates 10 AWG wire at minimum.
Can You Use 10 AWG on a 20-Amp Breaker?
Yes. Using 10 AWG wire on a 20-amp breaker is always code-compliant, though it is economically inefficient for most applications. Some electricians run 10 AWG throughout a kitchen or utility area specifically to allow any circuit to be upgraded to 30 amps in the future by simply changing the breaker. The tradeoff is higher wire cost per foot and slightly more labor per termination. The reverse, 12 AWG on a 30-amp breaker, is never permitted under any circumstances.
