CAT 6
CAT 6 (Category 6) is rated for 10,000 Mbps (10 Gigabits per second) at distances up to 164 feet (55 meters), and 1 Gigabit per second at the full 328-foot run. It operates at frequencies up to 250 MHz. CAT 6 achieves these higher speeds through tighter wire twisting, a plastic spline separator that runs down the center of the cable separating the four wire pairs, and stricter manufacturing tolerances. Real-World Speed Difference
For most current home and office uses, including 4K video streaming, video conferencing, cloud backup, and general internet browsing, you will not notice a speed difference between CAT 5e and CAT 6. Both cables deliver 1 Gigabit speeds that far exceed the bandwidth of typical residential internet service (which is usually 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps from the ISP). The practical speed difference between CAT 5e and CAT 6 becomes relevant when transferring large files between devices on the local network (NAS drives, local servers, high-resolution security camera systems) and when your network hardware upgrades to 2.5 Gbps or 10 Gbps switching in the future.
The Case for CAT 6 in New Construction
When you are running cable through walls during new construction or a renovation, the cable you install is typically in place for 15 to 20 years. The labor cost of pulling cable through finished walls is the primary expense: the material cost difference between CAT 5e and CAT 6 is small (typically $0.05 to $0.15 per foot). Replacing cable in finished walls 10 years from now when 10 Gbps becomes standard will cost far more than the marginal material upgrade today. For any new construction or renovation project, CAT 6 is the straightforward choice because the incremental cost is minimal relative to the labor investment in the installation.
The Case for CAT 5e
CAT 5e makes sense for surface-mounted or easily accessible cable runs that can be replaced without major disruption, patch cables and short jumpers where 1 Gigabit performance is all that is needed, and budget-constrained projects where large quantities of cable are being purchased and every cent per foot matters. It is also appropriate for upgrading an existing CAT 5 installation where CAT 5e provides a meaningful improvement without the full cost of a CAT 6 rewire.
CAT 6 vs CAT 6A
CAT 6A (Augmented Category 6) is a higher specification that supports 10 Gigabits at the full 328-foot distance (not just 164 feet like standard CAT 6). CAT 6A cable is significantly thicker, less flexible, and more expensive than standard CAT 6. For most residential and small office projects, standard CAT 6 provides ample headroom. CAT 6A is primarily used in commercial environments with long horizontal cable runs requiring 10 Gbps throughput.
Installation Considerations
CAT 6 is slightly thicker and stiffer than CAT 5e due to the internal spline separator. This means tighter bends are slightly harder to make, and stuffing high counts of CAT 6 cables through small conduit is more difficult than with CAT 5e.
