An overload condition occurs when the electrical demand placed on your Generac generator exceeds the maximum output the unit can safely produce. Generac generators have built-in overload protection that shuts the unit down before damage occurs, but understanding why overloads happen and how to prevent them is essential to keeping your home powered through extended outages. What Causes a Generator Overload
Generator output capacity is measured in kilowatts (kW). A Generac 22kW generator can produce a maximum of 22,000 watts continuously. If the total wattage of all appliances and systems running simultaneously exceeds 22,000 watts, the generator is overloaded. In practice, overloads most commonly occur when large motor loads start simultaneously, when a circuit fault draws excessive current, or when the household is running more high-draw appliances concurrently than the generator is sized to handle.
The most frequent overload triggers are multiple large motor starts in the same moment (AC compressor starting while the well pump and sump pump also cycle on simultaneously), running an electric range at high heat alongside the AC and other loads, electric water heater on a full heating cycle coinciding with peak household demand, or a failing appliance with a short circuit drawing far more current than normal.
How Generac Responds to an Overload
Generac generators handle overloads through a tiered response. First, the generator attempts to maintain output voltage and frequency under the increased load. If the demand exceeds what the engine governor and alternator can sustain, voltage begins to drop and engine speed falls below 3,600 RPM. The controller detects the underspeed condition and triggers the protection sequence. The main circuit breaker on the generator trips, disconnecting the load. Fault code 2100 (Overload) appears on the controller display. The generator may shut down completely or remain running in a no-load condition depending on the specific model and fault configuration.
Step-by-Step Fix for a Generator Overload
Do not simply reset the main breaker without reducing the connected load first. Resetting without load reduction will cause an immediate repeated overload and breaker trip. Follow this sequence: go to your home electrical panel and turn off the breakers for the largest loads first (central AC, electric water heater, electric range, electric dryer). After reducing the load, go to the generator and reset the main circuit breaker by pressing it firmly to the OFF position and then back to ON. Press the OFF button on the generator controller, then press AUTO to resume normal automatic operation. The fault code 2100 should clear. Return to the home panel and restore circuits one at a time, waiting 30 to 60 seconds between each restoration. Watch the generator output and listen for any sign of the engine laboring under load. Stop restoring circuits if the engine begins to bog down or the main breaker trips again.
Preventing Future Overloads
If overloads occur regularly, either the generator is undersized for the home electrical demand, or the household is running too many high-draw appliances concurrently. For undersized generators, upgrading to the next size provides the additional headroom. For concurrent demand issues, establishing outage operating habits helps: during a generator-powered period, avoid running the electric range and dishwasher while the AC is cycling, and avoid starting the electric dryer during peak demand periods. A whole-house energy monitor installed at the generator output can show real-time wattage and help identify which combinations of loads approach the capacity limit.
Overload vs Overcrank: Understanding the Difference
Overload (fault code 2100) occurs when the generator is running but the load exceeds capacity. Overcrank (fault code 1100) occurs when the generator fails to start after multiple cranking attempts. These are distinct faults with different causes and different fixes. If the display shows 1100, the starting system is the issue. If it shows 2100, the load is the issue. Identifying the correct fault code before troubleshooting saves time and prevents confusion between these two common fault conditions.
