A Generac generator that starts and then shuts off within seconds to minutes is triggering one of four protective shutdown conditions: low oil pressure, an engine fault detected by the controller, a carburetor or choke issue causing the engine to stall, or an electrical fault such as an overload or transfer switch problem. The controller display will show a fault code after most shutdown events, and reading that code is the fastest diagnostic step available.
Step 1: Read the Fault Code
Immediately after the generator shuts down, go to the controller panel and press the ENTER button to display the active fault code. The most common codes associated with start-then-shutdown behavior are: 1100 (Overcrank, engine failed to stabilize after cranking), 1300 (Low Oil Pressure, oil sensor triggered protective shutdown), 1200 (Overspeed, engine exceeded safe RPM briefly then shutdown), and 2100 (Overload, electrical demand exceeded generator capacity during startup). The code identifies which of the following causes to address first.
Cause 1: Low Oil Pressure (Fault 1300)
Low oil pressure is the most common cause of a start-then-shutdown event. The oil pressure sensor monitors pressure within the first few seconds of startup and triggers an immediate shutdown if pressure does not reach the minimum threshold. Check the oil level on the dipstick with the generator on a level surface and the engine cold. If oil is below the MIN mark, add full synthetic 5W-30 in small increments. After correcting the oil level, press OFF then AUTO on the controller to reset the fault and attempt a fresh start. If fault 1300 returns with correct oil level, the oil pressure sensor itself may be faulty.
Cause 2: Engine Stalling During Warmup (No Code or 1100)
If the generator starts, runs for 5 to 30 seconds, and then stalls without reaching stable idle speed, a carburetor issue is the most likely cause. This is common on generators that have been in storage or have not run in several months. Stale fuel deposits in the carburetor jets restrict fuel flow during the transition from choke to normal operation, causing the engine to lean out and stall. Try pressing the MANUAL button to initiate another start immediately, which sometimes clears minor carburetor restrictions through repeated cycling. Persistent stalling after several attempts requires carburetor cleaning or replacement.
Cause 3: Overspeed (Fault 1200)
An overspeed shutdown occurs when the engine briefly exceeds 3,800 RPM after startup, typically due to a governor linkage that is dirty, sticking, or misadjusted. The governor is responsible for holding engine speed at exactly 3,600 RPM under varying loads. When the governor response is sluggish or incorrect, the engine overshoots its target speed and the controller shuts it down as a safety measure. Governor adjustment requires a technician with a tachometer.
Cause 4: Overload at Transfer (Fault 2100)
If the generator shuts down at the moment the transfer switch connects the home electrical load, the startup demand from all motors in the home starting simultaneously may have exceeded the generator surge capacity. Reduce the home load before attempting another start by switching off the central AC and other large motor loads at the panel. Reset the controller and restart. If the generator runs stably with reduced load, reconnect home circuits one at a time to identify the overloading combination.
