One of the most common questions homeowners ask about standby generators is how long they can run during an extended power outage. The answer depends primarily on your fuel type and supply, but modern standby generators are engineered for extended operation.
Natural Gas Generators
Generators connected to a natural gas utility line can run virtually indefinitely, as the fuel supply is continuous. There is no tank to refill, and the gas utility typically maintains service even during electrical outages (since gas distribution uses its own infrastructure). During major natural disasters, gas service can be disrupted, but under normal outage conditions, your natural gas generator will run as long as needed.
Propane Generators
Propane generator runtime depends on tank size and the generator’s fuel consumption rate at the load it is serving. A typical 500-gallon propane tank can power a 22kW generator running at 50% load for approximately 7 to 10 days. A 1,000-gallon tank effectively doubles that duration. Planning your tank size based on your region’s typical outage duration ensures you have adequate fuel reserves.
Maintenance During Extended Runs
Manufacturers recommend checking oil levels every 24 hours during continuous operation. Most modern generators have automatic low-oil shutoff protection, but proactive monitoring is still best practice. After approximately 200 hours of continuous running, a full oil and filter change should be performed. For outages lasting several days, visually inspect the generator daily for leaks, unusual sounds, or error codes on the controller.
