Phase 2: Equipment Delivery (3 to 10 Business Days)
Generators and transfer switches ship via freight carrier. Standard transit times range from 3 to 10 business days depending on your location relative to the distribution warehouse. The freight carrier will contact you to schedule a delivery appointment. Upon delivery, inspect the shipment for any visible damage before signing the delivery receipt.
Phase 3: Permits (3 to 14 Days)
Most municipalities require electrical and building permits for generator installation. Your installer typically handles the permit application. Processing times vary by jurisdiction. Some areas issue permits within 2 to 3 business days, while others may take 1 to 2 weeks. In a few areas with high construction activity, permit processing can take longer. Your installer should be familiar with local timelines and can often begin site preparation while permits are processing.
Phase 4: On-Site Installation (1 to 2 Days)
The actual installation work is the fastest phase. A typical residential installation follows this sequence. Day one includes pouring or placing the mounting pad (if not already prepared), positioning the generator on the pad, running the electrical connections from the generator to the transfer switch location, installing the transfer switch at or near the main electrical panel, and connecting the fuel supply (natural gas line or propane connection). Day two (if needed) covers completing wiring, programming the transfer switch and generator controller, running a full system test under load, cleaning up the work area, and walking you through the system operation.
Many straightforward installations are completed in a single day. Installations that require extensive trenching for gas lines, long electrical runs, or panel upgrades may extend to two days.
Phase 5: Inspection (1 to 7 Days)
After installation, the municipal inspector reviews the work. Inspection scheduling depends on your jurisdiction and can range from next-day to a week or more. Once the installation passes inspection, your generator is officially approved and fully operational.
