How Often Should a Standby Generator Be Serviced?

Standby Generator Maintenance Schedule

A properly maintained standby generator will deliver reliable performance for 15 to 30 years. Neglecting maintenance is the most common reason generators fail when they are needed most. Here is a recommended maintenance schedule to keep your investment in top condition.

Weekly: Automatic Exercise Cycle

Most modern generators run an automatic exercise cycle once per week, typically for 10 to 20 minutes. This keeps the engine lubricated, charges the battery, and verifies that all systems are operational. Check your control panel to confirm the exercise schedule is active and that the unit is completing its cycle without error codes.

Monthly: Visual Inspection

Perform a quick visual check once per month. Look for oil or coolant leaks, check the battery terminals for corrosion, verify that the area around the generator is clear of debris and vegetation (maintain at least 3 feet of clearance), and check that the enclosure is free of pests or nesting animals.

Every 200 Hours or Annually

This is the standard service interval for most residential generators. A qualified technician should change the engine oil and oil filter, replace the air filter, inspect and replace spark plugs if needed, check the coolant level and condition (for liquid-cooled models), test the battery and charging system, inspect the fuel system for leaks, clean or replace the air cleaner element, and verify transfer switch operation.

Every 2 to 3 Years

More extensive service items include coolant replacement (liquid-cooled models), spark plug replacement, valve clearance adjustment, and a thorough inspection of all electrical connections and wiring.
