Step 1: Go to the generator and confirm the controller is currently in AUTO mode. The AUTO indicator should be lit. Step 2: Press the MANUAL or TEST button on the controller. On Generac Evolution controllers, this may be labeled TEST. On older Nexus controllers, it is labeled MANUAL. The engine will crank and start within a few seconds. Step 3: Allow the generator to run for a minimum of 10 minutes. This warm-up period lubricates internal components and allows you to observe steady-state operation. Step 4: While running, verify the controller display shows normal operating parameters. Voltage should read 240 volts, frequency should read 60 Hz, and no fault indicators should be lit. Step 5: After 10 to 20 minutes of operation, press the AUTO button to return the generator to automatic standby mode. The engine will continue running briefly for a cool-down period, then shut off automatically.
What to Check During the Manual Test
While the generator runs, check the oil level using the dipstick (engine must be off and level to get an accurate reading, so note the oil level before starting or after shutdown, not during). Listen for any unusual knocking, surging, or misfiring in the engine note. Inspect the enclosure exterior for any signs of oil leaks, exhaust discoloration, or physical damage since the last test. Inside the home, confirm that at least one outlet on the generator-covered circuits is delivering power. How This Differs from the Automatic Weekly Exercise
A manual test is identical in function to the automatic weekly exercise cycle but gives you direct control over timing and duration. The weekly auto-exercise runs for approximately 12 minutes at the day and time you programmed. A manual test can run as long as needed for diagnostic purposes. If you suspect a developing issue, running a manual test for 30 to 60 minutes under load (by allowing normal household circuits to draw power through the transfer switch) gives more diagnostic information than the brief auto-exercise.
