It displaces oxygen in the bloodstream and causes incapacitation and death at concentrations that build rapidly in enclosed spaces. Standby vs Portable: A Critical Distinction
The most dangerous CO situations involve portable generators operated inside homes, garages, or near open windows and doors during power outages. Portable generators are frequently misused by homeowners desperate to restore power during outages who bring the generator indoors or into the garage to protect it from weather or simply out of convenience. This misuse is responsible for the majority of generator CO fatalities.

The generator enclosure must be at least 18 inches from the building wall on most sides. These clearances ensure that exhaust disperses into the open air rather than accumulating near openings where it could enter the living space.

CO Detectors: Required in Every Home

CO detectors should be tested monthly and replaced every 5 to 7 years per manufacturer recommendations. What to Do If a CO Detector Alarms
If a CO detector alarms while the generator is operating, immediately evacuate all occupants from the home, call 911 from outside the home, do not re-enter until cleared by emergency responders, and shut down the generator from outside if it can be done safely. After the all-clear from emergency responders, have the generator installation inspected by a qualified technician before returning the unit to service. In most cases where a properly installed standby generator triggers a CO detector, an unrelated CO source (a malfunctioning gas appliance, a vehicle in an attached garage) is the actual cause.
Never Install a Generator Indoors
Regardless of the circumstances, never operate any generator inside a garage, basement, crawl space, shed, or any enclosed or partially enclosed structure. Even a garage with the door open retains enough CO from a running generator to reach dangerous concentrations quickly.
