Comparing Natural Gas and Propane for Standby Generators

Natural Gas Generators
Natural gas generators connect directly to your home’s existing gas supply line. The primary advantage is a continuous, virtually unlimited fuel source. You never need to worry about fuel levels, refills, or storage tanks. During extended outages, a natural gas generator will keep running as long as the gas utility maintains pressure. Natural gas is also typically less expensive per BTU than propane in most regions.
The drawback is that natural gas lines can lose pressure during widespread emergencies or natural disasters. If the gas supply is disrupted, the generator will shut down. Additionally, natural gas generators produce slightly less power output per cubic foot of fuel compared to propane.
Propane (LP) Generators
Propane generators draw fuel from a dedicated storage tank on your property, giving you a self-contained fuel supply that does not depend on utility infrastructure. This makes propane an excellent choice for rural properties without natural gas service. Propane has a higher energy density than natural gas, which means better output per unit of fuel. Propane also has an indefinite shelf life, so stored fuel will not degrade over time.
The main considerations with propane are the upfront cost of a storage tank (typically 250 to 1,000 gallons), the need to monitor fuel levels, and the cost of refills. During severe winter storms, propane delivery trucks may face delays.
Dual-Fuel Models
Many generators from brands like Generac and Kohler offer dual-fuel capability. This allows you to connect both a natural gas line and a propane tank, providing a backup fuel source if one supply is interrupted. Dual-fuel models cost slightly more upfront but provide maximum fuel security.
