The Generac Model Number System
Generac makes it easy to identify which models include a transfer switch. In the 22kW to 28kW range, each wattage is offered in two configurations. Generator-only models are the 7260 (22kW), 7261 (24kW), 7327 (26kW), and 7282 (28kW). Generator plus 200A ATS kits are the 7325 (22kW), 7326 (24kW), 7328 (26kW), and 7329 (28kW).
Buy the Kit (With ATS) If:
You do not currently have a transfer switch installed at your home. This applies to all first-time generator buyers. Even if your electrician says they can source a transfer switch independently, the factory-matched kit ensures the generator and switch communicate properly through the control wiring harness. The kit includes the correct interconnect cable, which must be matched to the specific generator and switch models.
You are replacing an old generator and transfer switch together. If your existing system is 10+ years old, replacing both components as a matched kit ensures you get current technology, a unified warranty, and guaranteed compatibility with the latest Generac controller and monitoring features.
You want to minimize installation complexity. When the installer receives a matched kit, there are no compatibility questions, no separate orders to coordinate, and no risk of mismatched components arriving on different delivery schedules. One box, one delivery, one installation.
Buy Generator-Only (Without ATS) If:
You already have a functioning Generac automatic transfer switch from a previous generator that is compatible with the new unit. This is common when replacing a failed or aging generator while the transfer switch is still operational. Verify compatibility with Generac or with our team before ordering.
You are upgrading from one Generac model to another and your existing ATS supports the new generator output. For example, if you have a Generac 200A ATS from a 22kW installation and are upgrading to 26kW, the existing 200A switch may be compatible. Confirm before purchasing.
Your electrician has specified a different transfer switch type (such as a Generac Smart Switch, load center switch, or service-rated switch) that is not the standard 200A whole-house ATS included in the kit.
