Here is how to select and install the right chandelier for rooms with elevated ceilings.
Sizing for Tall Spaces
The standard room dimension formula (length + width in feet = diameter in inches) still applies for horizontal proportion, but high ceilings require additional attention to vertical scale. A good guideline for chandelier height (the vertical dimension of the fixture itself, not the hanging height) is 2.5 to 3 inches of fixture height per foot of ceiling height. A room with a 12-foot ceiling calls for a chandelier that is 30 to 36 inches tall. A 16-foot foyer can support a fixture 40 to 48 inches in height or more.

Classic multi-tier chandeliers with cascading crystal are designed specifically for grand spaces. For two-story foyers, position the fixture so it is centered in the vertical space and visible from both the ground floor and the upper landing. A general formula is to hang the fixture with its center point at approximately one-half to two-thirds of the total ceiling height.
Installation Considerations
Large chandeliers for high ceilings can be heavy, often 50 to 150 pounds or more. The ceiling junction box must be rated to support the fixture weight (a standard box rated for 50 pounds may not be sufficient). A licensed electrician should verify structural support and install an appropriate heavy-duty mounting bracket. For extremely tall ceilings, a motorized chandelier lift system allows you to lower the fixture for cleaning and bulb replacement without scaffolding.
