Every home standby generator sold in the United States carries the same trade-offs: a significant upfront investment, mandatory licensed installation, a recurring maintenance schedule, operating noise, fixed clearance requirements around the unit, and dependence on a natural gas or propane supply. The disadvantages of a Generac generator are not defects. They are the cost of owning a machine that has to start unattended, in bad weather, and carry a house for days.
IB Lighting sells this equipment, and this page is written to be useful rather than flattering. Each trade-off below is paired immediately with the published specification that reduces it, so you can weigh the real size of each one instead of reading a list of complaints with the answers buried somewhere else.
First, a distinction that matters
Almost everything below applies to every home standby generator on the market, not to Generac specifically. Cost, licensed installation, permits, scheduled maintenance, operating noise, clearance rules, and fuel dependency are properties of a permanently installed internal combustion engine wired into a residential service panel. Kohler, Cummins, Briggs and Stratton, and Champion units carry the same list.
Treat this as a category decision rather than a brand decision. If the disadvantages of a Generac generator rule out a standby system at your property, switching brands will not change that outcome. It will only change the badge on the enclosure.
Does any of this actually apply to you?
Most buyers can clear the majority of this list in under a minute. If the five statements below are true at your property, the disadvantages of a Generac generator are largely theoretical for you.
- You have natural gas service at the house, or space for a propane tank.
- You have a side or rear yard location clear of doors, windows, and fresh air intakes.
- You expect to stay in the home for more than a few years.
- You are willing to book an annual service visit, the same way you already do for a furnace.
- Your closest neighbor is not directly beside your proposed pad location.
If all five are true, the practical list shortens to two items: the upfront cost and the maintenance schedule. Both are addressed below. That is a considerably shorter list than the disadvantages of a Generac generator you will find on most pages.
What you are actually signing up for
The disadvantages of a Generac generator are set out below one at a time. Each item states the trade-off plainly, then the published feature or specification that offsets it. Where nothing offsets it, that is stated too.
The upfront investment is substantial
The trade-off. The most cited of the disadvantages of a Generac generator is simply that a home standby system is one of the larger discretionary purchases a homeowner makes, and the generator is only part of it. The automatic transfer switch, gas line work, electrical work, permits, and licensed labor all sit on top.
What offsets it. Guardian automatic standby units carry a five year limited warranty as standard per Generac published literature. Equipment and installation labor are quoted separately, which means buying the equipment directly gives you a fixed number to take to installers rather than a single bundled figure you cannot break apart. Freight insurance is included on every unit we ship.
You cannot install it yourself
The trade-off. Installation involves a gas line, a service-rated or load-managed transfer switch, and a connection to the main electrical service. It requires a licensed electrician, usually a licensed gas fitter, a permit, and an inspection. Self-installation is unsafe, typically illegal, and generally voids the manufacturer limited warranty.
What offsets it. It happens once. A permitted, inspected installation is also what keeps your warranty position and your homeowners insurance position clean after a claim. Generac operates the largest installer and service network in the category, so finding a qualified installer near you is easier than with any competing brand.
Maintenance never ends
The trade-off. Of the disadvantages of a Generac generator, this is the one owners underestimate most. Break-in oil and filter service falls at the first 25 hours of run time. After that the unit needs oil, filter, air filter, spark plug, and valve service on schedule, and the starting battery is a consumable that typically needs replacing every two to three years.
What offsets it. Current Guardian air-cooled models publish a service interval of up to two years or 200 hours, which is a long interval for this engine class. The Evolution controller tracks maintenance intervals and battery status on its display, and Mobile Link remote monitoring is included with Guardian series units, so the schedule is tracked for you rather than left on your calendar.
It makes noise, including when the power is on
The trade-off. Air-cooled units in the residential range commonly sit around 67 dB measured at 7 meters during operation, and the unit runs continuously through an outage, including overnight. It also self-exercises on a schedule.
What offsets it. The Quiet-Test self-test mode runs the exercise cycle at reduced engine speed for a five or twelve minute test rather than at full operating speed, which is both quieter and cheaper on fuel. The exercise interval is selectable weekly, biweekly, or monthly. Every serious standby unit on the market now sits in a similar decibel band, so this belongs on a list of standby trade-offs generally rather than on a list of disadvantages of a Generac generator.
It occupies permanent outdoor space with mandatory clearances
The trade-off. This is the most site-specific of the disadvantages of a Generac generator. The unit needs a permanent pad with manufacturer-specified clearance from the building, plus required separation from doors, windows, and fresh air intakes so exhaust cannot enter the home. HOA setback rules apply in many subdivisions.
What offsets it. Many current air-cooled models are listed for installation as close as 18 inches from the building, which is tighter than a good deal of competing equipment and often the difference between a compliant location and no location at all. A composite mounting pad is included. Local code governs, so confirm the final position with your installing electrician.
It depends on a fuel supply that can fail
The trade-off. Fuel dependency is the least discussed of the disadvantages of a Generac generator. Natural gas is very reliable during storms but not immune to gas main damage or utility shutoffs. Propane removes utility dependence but makes tank capacity a hard ceiling.
What offsets it. Current Guardian models switch between natural gas and LP in the field without tools, so the fuel decision is not permanent and can be changed if your service situation changes. Natural gas distribution is underground, which is why it usually survives the wind events that take down the overhead lines causing the outage in the first place.
Air-cooled models carry duty limits
The trade-off. Air-cooled engines running at 3600 rpm are engineered for outage duty rather than continuous prime power.
What offsets it. The air-cooled range now extends to 28kW, introduced in January 2025 and the largest air-cooled home standby unit available, so most homes reach adequate capacity without stepping up to a liquid-cooled unit. If your requirement is genuinely continuous operation, this one does not go away. A liquid-cooled unit at 1800 rpm is the correct engineering answer and it costs more. For the large majority of homes this never becomes one of the disadvantages of a Generac generator in practice.
The one with no offset: read the warranty document, not the headline
The trade-off. Warranty terms across standby brands differ in what they cover and for how long, not only in headline length. Parts coverage, labor coverage, and technician travel are frequently covered for different periods within the same warranty, and that structure varies by manufacturer.
What offsets it. Nothing. This is the one entry on the list of disadvantages of a Generac generator with no counterweight. Compare the actual warranty document for the exact model rather than the headline number on the sales page. If long-term labor coverage is your top priority, tell us before you order and we will point you at the right unit for that priority, including Kohler, which we also carry. That is the honest answer even when it moves you off the model you first picked.
Disadvantages of a Generac generator that are frequently overstated
Not everything published as one of the disadvantages of a Generac generator survives checking against the record.
| Common claim | What the record actually shows |
|---|---|
| Generac units get recalled constantly | The April 2026 CPSC recall of approximately 149,400 units covered gasoline-powered portable models with a carburetor fuel leak on first fueling. Home standby units were not part of that action. Recalls in this industry are typically model-specific and category-specific. |
| They fail when you need them | Field failures on standby units are heavily concentrated in maintenance items, above all the starting battery. A unit on a service schedule behaves very differently from a neglected one. |
| Wi-Fi monitoring means it takes care of itself | Remote monitoring reports a fault. It does not fix one. Monitoring shortens response time and nothing else. |
| Any electrician can service it | Warranty terms generally require service by qualified personnel following manufacturer procedures. Using a random contractor can create a warranty dispute later. |
Published specifications worth knowing
These are verified figures from Generac literature and third party market analysis. They do not map to a specific one of the disadvantages of a Generac generator above, but they are part of an accurate picture.
| Specification | What it means |
|---|---|
| Roughly 70 to 75 percent of North American residential standby installations | Per industry analysis. The practical consequence is parts availability and technician familiarity almost anywhere in the country, which is the real-world answer to what happens when it needs service. |
| Total harmonic distortion below 5 percent | Generac publishes this under True Power Technology and states it is lower than IEEE standards for utility power. It matters for HVAC control boards, computers, and medical equipment. |
| All-aluminum enclosure with RhinoCoat finish | NEMA 3R aluminum enclosure rated to withstand winds up to 150 mph per the published specification sheet. Aluminum is the correct material within a few miles of salt water. |
| Support operated 24 hours a day from Wisconsin | Generac states it runs a customer support team every day of the year from its headquarters. |
| Engineered and built in the USA using domestic and foreign parts | Generac published wording. Specifications and warranty terms vary across the lineup, so verify both for the exact model you order. |
How the disadvantages of a Generac generator compare with a portable generator
Most buyers weigh the disadvantages of a Generac generator against doing nothing. That is the wrong comparison. The real comparison is standby versus portable, and the safety difference is the part buyers consistently underweight.
| Factor | Home standby | Portable |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | High | Low |
| Installation | Licensed, permitted, one time | None |
| Operation during an outage | Automatic, unattended | Manual setup, refueling, cord management |
| Fuel handling | Piped gas or tank, no handling | Gasoline cans, stabilizer, storage |
| Carbon monoxide exposure | Permanently sited outdoors at code clearance | Leading residential CO fatality source when misused |
| Runtime | Indefinite on natural gas | Hours per tank |
The CPSC has reported that roughly 85 people die each year in the United States from carbon monoxide poisoning associated with gasoline-powered portable generators, with the large majority of incidents occurring at residential locations. That data is published in the CPSC report on carbon monoxide fatalities from engine-driven generators. A permanently installed standby unit at code clearance removes the behavior that causes those deaths.
When the disadvantages of a Generac generator outweigh the benefits
There are households for which the disadvantages of a Generac generator genuinely win and a standby unit is the wrong purchase. Being direct about that is more useful than a sales pitch.
- Renters, and owners planning to sell within a year or two
- Homes with no compliant location that satisfies clearance and setback rules
- Properties with no natural gas service and no room or approval for a propane tank
- Buyers who will not commit to a maintenance schedule or a service plan
- Homes in areas with very short and very rare outages, where a portable unit used correctly may be proportionate
Quick recap
- The disadvantages of a Generac generator are cost, mandatory professional installation, permanent maintenance, noise, clearance requirements, fuel dependency, and air-cooled duty limits.
- Every one of them applies to every standby brand, so this is a category decision rather than a brand decision.
- Published offsets include a five year limited warranty, a service interval up to two years or 200 hours, reduced-speed self-testing, field-switchable fuel, and remote monitoring included with the Guardian series.
- Compared with a portable generator, the safety trade is decisively in favor of a permanently installed unit.
- The item with no offset is warranty structure. Read the actual document for the model you order.
