Installing a Level 2 EV charger at home requires a dedicated 240-volt circuit from your electrical panel to the charger location. This is the same type of high-voltage circuit used for electric ranges and clothes dryers. A licensed electrician handles the panel work, wire run, and outlet or hardwired connection. Electrical Panel Capacity
Before adding an EV charger circuit, your electrician must verify your panel has capacity for the additional load. A 48-amp charger on a 60-amp breaker adds significant demand to your electrical service. Most homes with 200-amp service can accommodate an EV charger without a panel upgrade. Homes with 100-amp or 150-amp service may require a panel upgrade, a load management device, or a lower-amperage charger to fit within the existing capacity. Your electrician can perform a load calculation to determine if your panel supports the addition.
Circuit and Wire Requirements
For a 48-amp charger (the most common maximum-speed configuration), you need a 60-amp double-pole breaker (NEC 80% continuous load rule: 48 / 0.80 = 60), 6 AWG copper wire for runs up to approximately 65 feet, and 4 AWG copper for longer runs to manage voltage drop. For a 40-amp charger on a 50-amp breaker, 8 AWG copper wire is standard for short runs, with 6 AWG recommended for runs over 50 feet. Plug-In vs. Hardwired Connection
If your charger is a plug-in model (like most Lectron and Greenworks units), the electrician installs a NEMA 14-50 outlet at the charger location. You simply plug the charger into the outlet. If your charger is hardwired (like the Tesla Wall Connector or Greenworks 48A), the electrician runs the wire directly from the panel to the charger mounting location and connects it inside the charger junction box. Hardwired installations are permanent and provide a cleaner appearance.
Charger Mounting Location
Most homeowners mount the charger on the garage wall near the driver-side charging port of their vehicle. Consider the cable length of your chosen charger (15 to 24 feet depending on model) and ensure it reaches the charging port from the mounting location. The charger should be mounted at a height of 36 to 48 inches from the floor for comfortable cable handling. For outdoor installations (driveway or carport charging), use a charger rated for outdoor/wet locations and ensure the circuit is GFCI protected.
Permits
Most municipalities require an electrical permit for adding a 240V circuit. Your electrician handles the permit application and inspection scheduling. The inspection verifies proper wire sizing, breaker compatibility, and code compliance. Permit fees typically range from $50 to $200.
Total Installation Cost
The charger itself costs $300 to $700 depending on brand and features. Electrical installation (new circuit from panel, outlet or hardwired connection, permit) typically costs $500 to $1,500 depending on the distance from the panel to the charger location and local labor rates. Total project cost for charger plus installation is typically $800 to $2,200.
