Generac Standby Generator Warranty Coverage
Every Generac home standby generator includes a 5-year limited warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship from the date of installation. This warranty applies to the engine, alternator, main control board, and all factory-installed components. Generac stands behind their products with one of the strongest warranties in the residential generator industry. Here is a detailed breakdown of what the warranty covers, what it does not, and how to protect your coverage.
What the Standard Warranty Covers
The Generac 5-year limited warranty covers the complete generator assembly including the engine and all internal engine components, the alternator (the component that generates electricity), the main control panel and circuit board, the factory-installed enclosure and housing, and all electrical connections and wiring installed at the factory. If a covered component fails due to a manufacturing defect during the warranty period, Generac will repair or replace the component at no cost for parts. Labor coverage varies by the specific warranty terms and model; some models include labor while others cover parts only. Review your specific warranty documentation for labor coverage details.
What the Warranty Does Not Cover
Like all manufacturer warranties, the Generac warranty has exclusions. Components not covered include normal wear items such as spark plugs, air filters, oil filters, and engine oil. Battery replacement is excluded as batteries are consumable items with their own separate warranty. Damage caused by improper installation, modification, or unauthorized repairs is not covered. Damage from external causes (floods, lightning strikes, acts of nature, power surges) falls outside the warranty. Cosmetic damage to the enclosure is excluded. Damage resulting from failure to perform required maintenance is not covered. Fuel system issues caused by contaminated or improper fuel are excluded.
Maintaining Warranty Eligibility
To keep your Generac warranty valid, several conditions must be met. The generator must be installed by a qualified technician in accordance with all applicable building codes and Generac installation guidelines. Maintenance must be performed on schedule following the intervals specified in the owner manual (oil changes, filter replacements, spark plug service). Only genuine Generac parts or equivalent quality components should be used for maintenance and repairs. The generator must be used in the application it was designed for (residential backup power) and not operated beyond its rated capacity.
Extended Warranty Options
Generac offers extended warranty plans that can increase total coverage to 7 or 10 years. Extended warranties must typically be purchased within 18 months of the original installation date (terms may vary). The extended warranty provides the same level of coverage as the standard warranty for the additional years. For homeowners who plan to stay in their home long-term, an extended warranty provides additional peace of mind and protects against major repair costs as the generator ages.
Transferability
If you sell your home during the warranty period, the remaining warranty can transfer to the new homeowner. This adds value to the sale and provides the buyer with confidence in the generator system. Transfer procedures and any applicable fees are outlined in the warranty documentation.
How to Make a Warranty Claim
If you experience an issue you believe is covered under warranty, contact an authorized Generac service dealer. They will diagnose the issue and, if it falls under warranty coverage, submit the claim to Generac for parts and repair authorization. Keep your original purchase receipt, installation documentation, and maintenance records accessible, as these may be required to validate the warranty claim.
Buying from an Authorized Dealer Matters
Generac warranties are valid only when the generator is purchased from an authorized dealer. Products purchased through unauthorized channels, gray market sellers, or secondary marketplace listings may not be eligible for warranty coverage. IB Lighting is an authorized Generac dealer, and every unit we sell includes full manufacturer warranty protection.
