What the Numbers Mean
The “14/2” designation indicates 14 AWG copper conductors (rated for a maximum of 15 amps) with 2 insulated current-carrying conductors inside the sheath: one black (hot) and one white (neutral). A bare copper ground wire is also included, bringing the total to three wires despite the “2” in the name. The NM-B jacket is the standard non-metallic sheathing rated for dry indoor locations with 90-degree Celsius conductor insulation.
Where 14/2 Romex Is Used
Lighting Circuits
The most common application for 14/2 Romex is dedicated lighting circuits. A 15-amp circuit using 14/2 cable can support approximately 1,440 watts of continuous lighting load (or 1,800 watts of non-continuous load). For LED lighting, which draws a fraction of the wattage of incandescent bulbs, a single 15-amp lighting circuit can supply an entire floor of a typical home. Most homes use multiple 15-amp lighting circuits for zone control and redundancy.
General-Purpose Outlet Circuits
14/2 Romex on a 15-amp breaker is acceptable for outlet circuits in bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, hallways, and other spaces that do not have code-mandated 20-amp requirements. Switch Legs

Smoke Detector Circuits
Hardwired, interconnected smoke detectors are typically wired with 14/2 (or 14/3 when interconnection wiring requires the third conductor). The power draw of smoke detectors is minimal, and a 15-amp circuit is standard for this application.
Where NOT to Use 14/2 Romex
14/2 NM-B must not be used on any circuit protected by a 20-amp breaker. Connecting 14 AWG wire to a 20-amp breaker is a fire hazard and a serious code violation because the breaker will allow more current than the wire can safely carry. Do not use 14/2 for kitchen countertop outlets, bathroom outlets, garage outlets, outdoor receptacles, or laundry room outlet circuits. These applications require 20-amp circuits with 12/2 minimum. Do not use NM-B cable in wet locations, outdoors, underground, or in commercial buildings requiring conduit or MC cable.
14/2 vs 12/2: Cost and Practical Considerations
14/2 Romex costs approximately 15% to 25% less per foot than 12/2 Romex due to the smaller copper content. On a whole-house wiring project with dozens of circuits, this difference adds up. 14/2 cable is also physically thinner and more flexible than 12/2, making it easier to pull through drilled studs, bend in junction boxes, and terminate on devices. For circuits that genuinely only need 15 amps, 14/2 is the appropriate and cost-effective choice.
Some electricians prefer to wire everything with 12/2 for uniformity, which eliminates the risk of accidentally connecting 14 AWG to a 20-amp breaker and provides the option to upgrade any circuit to 20 amps later. This is a valid approach but adds material cost. The choice between mixed gauges (14/2 for 15A circuits, 12/2 for 20A circuits) and uniform 12/2 throughout is a matter of professional preference and budget.
