What the Numbers Mean

In 14/3 and 12/3 Romex, the first number is the wire gauge (14 AWG for 15-amp circuits, 12 AWG for 20-amp circuits). The “3” indicates three insulated current-carrying conductors. Inside the cable you will find a black hot conductor, a white neutral conductor, a red second hot conductor, and a bare copper ground wire. Four wires total despite the “3” designation, because the bare ground is not counted in the conductor number.

Application 1: Three-Way Switch Wiring

Three-way switches control a light from two separate locations (top and bottom of a staircase, two ends of a hallway, or two entrances to a room). Three-way wiring requires a traveler conductor between the two switch boxes in addition to the hot and neutral. 14/3 or 12/3 Romex provides the extra conductor needed for the traveler wire. This is one of the most common reasons electricians reach for three-conductor cable in residential wiring. Any time you are wiring a light that will be controlled from two locations, plan on 14/3 or 12/3 between the switch boxes.

Application 2: Split (Half-Hot) Receptacles

A split receptacle is a standard duplex outlet where the top plug is switched (controlled by a wall switch) and the bottom plug is always live, or vice versa. This configuration is common in living rooms and bedrooms where code requires a switched outlet for floor lamps. To wire a split receptacle, you break the tab between the hot screws on the outlet, connect the black conductor to one terminal and the red conductor to the other terminal, then run the black and red back to separate breakers or use them as the switched and unswitched feeds. A 14/3 or 12/3 cable between the switch and the outlet provides the conductors needed for this configuration.

Application 3: Multi-Wire Branch Circuits (MWBC)

A multi-wire branch circuit uses one cable to supply two separate 120-volt circuits that share a common neutral. The black conductor serves one circuit and the red conductor serves a second circuit, with both circuits returning current on the shared white neutral. This configuration requires a double-pole breaker (or a handle tie) so both circuits trip simultaneously when one trips, preventing a dangerous backfed neutral condition. MWBCs were common in older residential wiring and are still used today for kitchen small-appliance circuits, where two 20-amp circuits can be run with a single 12/3 cable instead of two separate 12/2 cables, saving material cost on long runs.

Application 4: 240-Volt Appliance Circuits Requiring a Neutral

Some 240-volt appliances (electric ranges, cooktops, newer 4-wire dryer circuits) require both 240-volt power and 120-volt power for controls, clocks, timers, and lights. These circuits use a 10/3 or 8/3 cable with black and red as the two hot conductors, white as the neutral, and bare as the ground. While 10/2 and 12/2 serve standard 240-volt circuits without a neutral, appliances requiring both voltages need the three-conductor version with an explicit neutral wire.

14/3 vs 12/3: Which to Use

The gauge selection follows the same rule as two-conductor cable: match the wire to the breaker amperage. 14/3 is for 15-amp circuits (15-amp breaker). 12/3 is for 20-amp circuits (20-amp breaker). For three-way switch wiring, the gauge is typically determined by the lighting circuit it connects to: 14/3 for standard 15-amp lighting circuits, 12/3 for 20-amp circuits. For kitchen MWBC applications, 12/3 is required because kitchen small-appliance circuits must be 20-amp per the NEC.

Common Mistake to Avoid

The most common three-conductor wiring mistake is using 14/3 on a 20-amp circuit. This happens most often when an electrician grabs the wrong spool on a job with multiple cable types in use.
