Generac Mobile Link: Remote Generator Monitoring Explained
Generac Mobile Link is a WiFi-connected monitoring system that gives you real-time visibility into your standby generator from anywhere in the world using a smartphone, tablet, or computer. It eliminates the guesswork of generator ownership by reporting operating status, power events, maintenance needs, and fault conditions directly to your device. For homeowners who travel, own vacation properties, or simply want to know their generator is ready at all times, Mobile Link provides genuine peace of mind that goes beyond the generator itself.
What Mobile Link Monitors
Generator Operating Status
Mobile Link reports whether your generator is in standby mode (ready and waiting), actively running (powering your home during an outage), or in exercise mode (performing its weekly automated test cycle). You can see at a glance whether your home is on utility power or generator power, which is especially valuable if you are away from home during a storm or outage event.
Utility Power Status
The system tracks utility power events at your home, including when outages begin and end, how long each outage lasted, and a history of power events over time. This data helps you understand the frequency and severity of outages in your area and reinforces the value of your generator investment.
Maintenance Alerts
Mobile Link sends push notifications when scheduled maintenance is approaching or overdue. Oil changes, filter replacements, and other service items are tracked automatically based on the generator run hours. You receive the alert on your phone before a missed maintenance interval becomes a problem, keeping your generator in peak condition and preserving your warranty eligibility.
Fault and Warning Notifications
If the generator detects a fault condition (low oil pressure, high temperature, overcrank, or other issues), Mobile Link sends an immediate alert to your phone. This early warning allows you to arrange service before a minor issue becomes a major failure. Without Mobile Link, a fault could go unnoticed until the next outage when the generator fails to start.
Which Generac Models Include Mobile Link
Most current Generac Guardian series home standby generators (2020 models and newer) include WiFi connectivity and Mobile Link capability as a standard feature. The WiFi module is built into the generator control panel. Older Guardian models and some entry-level units may not include the built-in WiFi module but can be upgraded with an add-on Mobile Link accessory (Model 7170 or 7169) that retrofits WiFi monitoring to existing generators.
Setup and App
Setting up Mobile Link requires connecting the generator to your home WiFi network through the generator control panel. The process takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes and is covered in the generator installation manual. Once connected, download the free Generac Mobile Link app (available for iOS and Android) and create your account. The app walks you through linking your generator to your account. After setup, monitoring is continuous and automatic with no subscription fee.
Remote Monitoring for Rental and Vacation Properties
Mobile Link is particularly valuable for generators installed at properties where you are not always present. Vacation homes, rental properties, Airbnb units, and seasonal residences all benefit from remote visibility. If the power goes out at your beach house during an off-season storm, Mobile Link tells you instantly whether the generator activated, is running normally, and when utility power was restored. Without this visibility, you might not know about a problem until you arrive weeks later to find a flooded basement or spoiled refrigerator.
Mobile Link vs. Cellular Monitoring
For properties without reliable WiFi (remote cabins, rural locations, or homes where the internet goes down during outages), Generac offers a 4G LTE cellular monitoring module (Model 7009) as an alternative to WiFi-based Mobile Link. The cellular module connects to the mobile data network instead of WiFi, providing monitoring even when your home internet is down. The cellular option requires a small monthly data fee but ensures uninterrupted connectivity regardless of your WiFi status.
