Automatic Transfer Switch
An automatic transfer switch (ATS) requires no human intervention. It monitors utility power 24/7 and automatically starts the generator, waits for it to stabilize, transfers your electrical loads to the generator, and reverses the process when utility power returns. This means your home is protected even when you are away, asleep, or on vacation. An ATS is the standard choice for standby generators and provides the seamless, hands-free backup power experience most homeowners expect.
Which One Should You Choose?
If you are installing a permanent standby generator, an automatic transfer switch is the clear recommendation. The convenience, reliability, and safety of fully automatic operation justify the additional investment. Manual switches are typically reserved for portable generator setups where automatic operation is not possible.
