Tank Placement and Setback Requirements
Propane tanks must be installed by a licensed propane supplier and must meet setback distances from the building, property lines, and ignition sources per NFPA 58. A 500-gallon tank must be at least 10 feet from any building wall and 10 feet from a property line. The generator itself must be at least 5 feet from the propane tank. Natural Gas as an Alternative
If natural gas service is available at the property, it eliminates the tank sizing question entirely. Natural gas flows continuously from the utility line with no tank to refill, no 20 percent reserve concern, and a fuel cost of approximately 60 to 70 percent less per hour than propane. If the choice between natural gas and propane is still open, natural gas is the more economical fuel for residential standby operation wherever service is available.
