Hot Tub Wire Size at a Glance
The large majority of residential hot tubs run on a dedicated 240-volt, 50-amp circuit, which calls for 6 AWG copper wire. The exact size depends on the spa nameplate, the run length, and the wire type, but 6 AWG copper covers most installations. Hot tub circuits are governed by NEC Article 680, which adds water-safety rules on top of normal circuit sizing.

Use Wet-Location Wire
Hot tub circuits run outdoors and in damp areas, so you cannot use standard NM-B Romex, which is for dry interior locations only. The common approach is THHN or THWN-2 conductors pulled through conduit, since THWN-2 is rated for wet locations. Most installations use a 4-wire setup with two hots, a neutral, and a ground, because many spas have 120-volt components that need the neutral.
GFCI and Disconnect Rules
NEC Article 680 requires GFCI protection for every hot tub circuit, almost always provided by a GFCI breaker in a small spa panel. That spa panel also serves as the required disconnect, which must be within sight of the tub, at least 5 feet from the water, and generally no more than 50 feet away. Metal parts within 5 feet of the spa must also be bonded together, typically with 8 AWG solid copper.
Watch Voltage Drop on Long Runs
For a 50-amp spa, 6 AWG copper is fine for runs up to roughly 75 feet. Beyond that, voltage drop becomes a concern and many installers step up to 4 AWG copper to keep the spa running efficiently. Distance is one of the biggest reasons to upsize wire on a hot tub circuit.
