What Wire Do I Need for a Dishwasher Circuit?

A dishwasher requires a dedicated 120-volt, 20-amp circuit wired with 12/2 NM-B cable and a 20-amp single-pole breaker. NEC Section 210.11(C)(2) requires dishwashers to be connected to a dedicated branch circuit, meaning no other outlet, light, or appliance may share the circuit. Because the circuit must be 20 amps, 12 AWG is the minimum wire size. Installing a dishwasher on a 15-amp circuit with 14 AWG wire is a code violation that will fail inspection and creates a genuine overload risk during the dishwasher heating cycle.

Why Dishwashers Need a Dedicated 20-Amp Circuit

Most residential dishwashers draw 10 to 12 amps during the heated wash and dry cycles when the internal heating element and wash motor run simultaneously. A 15-amp circuit with 14 AWG wire has a practical continuous load limit of 12 amps (80 percent of the 15-amp rating, per NEC 210.19). A dishwasher at 12 amps on a 15-amp circuit runs at that absolute limit with zero remaining capacity. The NEC mandates a dedicated 20-amp circuit to prevent nuisance tripping and provide adequate headroom above the dishwasher peak demand.

Hardwired vs Outlet Connection

Dishwashers connect to their circuit in one of two ways: through a 20-amp outlet (NEMA 5-20R) installed under the sink cabinet, or hardwired directly into a junction box. Both methods use 12/2 NM-B wire and a 20-amp circuit. The outlet connection allows unplugging the appliance for service without tripping the breaker. The hardwired method is cleaner in appearance but requires switching off the circuit at the panel for any service work. Check the dishwasher installation instructions and your local code for the required connection method before wiring.

GFCI Protection

NEC 2023 requires GFCI protection on dishwasher circuits because dishwashers are in kitchens near water. This requirement applies to new installations and circuit modifications. GFCI protection can be provided by a GFCI circuit breaker at the panel or a GFCI outlet under the sink at the first receptacle on the circuit. Older installations that predate this requirement are not retroactively required to upgrade unless the circuit is modified.

Cable Routing

The 12/2 NM-B cable runs from the 20-amp single-pole breaker at the panel through the kitchen wall cavity to the dishwasher location under the sink. Protect the cable where it passes through cabinet walls and floors using cable clamps. A short flex conduit or strain relief fitting where the cable enters the appliance or junction box prevents abrasion damage at the connection point over the life of the appliance.
