Swimming Pool Electrical Wiring: Wire Types and NEC 680 Requirements
Swimming pool electrical wiring is one of the most tightly regulated residential applications in the National Electrical Code because water and electricity in close proximity create life-safety risks that are fundamentally different from indoor wiring. NEC Article 680 governs all electrical installations within the pool area and imposes requirements that do not apply to other residential circuits. NEC Article 680: The Governing Standard
Article 680 of the NEC covers “Swimming Pools, Fountains, and Similar Installations.” It establishes minimum distance requirements from the pool edge for electrical equipment, mandates specific wiring methods, requires GFCI protection on all outlets within 20 feet of the pool, and addresses equipotential bonding (connecting all metal parts in and around the pool to a common ground to prevent voltage gradients in the water). Any residential pool installation that does not comply with Article 680 will fail inspection and, more importantly, creates genuine drowning and electrocution risk.
Pool Pump Motor Wiring
The pool pump is typically the largest electrical load in a pool installation. Most residential pool pumps are 1 HP to 2 HP single-phase motors drawing 10 to 20 amps at 240 volts. A typical 1 HP pool pump requires a dedicated 20-amp, 240-volt circuit with 12/2 NM-B from the panel to the point where it exits the home, then 12/2 UF-B for any direct burial underground run to the pump equipment pad, or individual 12 AWG THHN conductors in Schedule 40 PVC conduit for the underground and exterior portions of the run. PVC conduit (not EMT) is required for underground and outdoor portions of pool wiring because it is non-conductive and does not corrode in ground contact.
Conduit Requirements Within 5 Feet of the Pool
All wiring installed within 5 feet of the inside wall of the pool must be in rigid metal conduit, rigid nonmetallic conduit (Schedule 80 PVC), or liquidtight flexible nonmetallic conduit. This means that as the pool pump wiring approaches the equipment pad location near the pool, it must transition from direct-burial UF-B (which is acceptable for the underground run far from the pool) into listed conduit for the final approach to the equipment. The equipment pad itself (housing the pump, filter, heater controls, and automation) must be positioned at least 5 feet from the pool wall.
Pool Lighting Wiring
Underwater pool lights are typically 12-volt fixtures powered through a transformer, which eliminates the shock hazard of 120-volt current in the water. The 120-volt supply to the transformer uses 12 AWG THHN in PVC conduit from the panel or subpanel to the transformer location, which must be at least 10 feet from the pool edge. The 12-volt output wiring from the transformer to the light niche is a listed low-voltage pool cable run in a conduit sleeve through the pool shell.
GFCI Protection Requirements
NEC 680.22 requires GFCI protection for all 125-volt, 15-amp, and 20-amp receptacles located within 20 feet of the inside wall of a pool. This is a significantly larger protection zone than the standard bathroom or outdoor GFCI requirement. Any outlet installed anywhere on the property within 20 feet of the pool must be GFCI-protected. The pool pump motor circuit also requires GFCI protection at the motor branch circuit level.
Equipotential Bonding
Article 680.26 requires all metal parts in and around the pool to be connected by a solid copper bonding conductor, typically 8 AWG solid copper. This includes the pool shell reinforcement (rebar), all metal pool equipment (pump, filter, heater), metal water supply piping within 5 feet of the pool, and any metal fittings in the pool structure. The bonding conductor equalizes potential across all metal surfaces, preventing the voltage gradients that can electrify the water around a grounded metal component. This is not a grounding requirement for fault protection but rather a safety measure specific to pool environments.

Pool electrical work is strongly recommended to be performed by a licensed electrician familiar with Article 680. The life-safety implications of pool wiring errors are severe, inspections are mandatory, and the combination of underground, outdoor, wet-location, and bonding requirements makes this one of the more complex residential electrical projects.
