What Wire Do I Need for a Washing Machine Circuit?

A washing machine requires a dedicated 120-volt, 20-amp circuit wired with 12/2 NM-B cable and a 20-amp single-pole breaker. NEC Section 210.11(C)(2) specifically requires that laundry area receptacles be supplied by at least one dedicated 20-amp branch circuit. This means no other appliance, outlet, or light may share the washing machine circuit, and the 20-amp requirement mandates 12 AWG wire as the minimum conductor size.

Why Washing Machines Need a Dedicated 20-Amp Circuit

Modern washing machines draw significant current during specific parts of the wash cycle. The fill valve and control electronics draw 1 to 3 amps continuously. The wash agitator or drum motor draws 5 to 8 amps during normal agitation. The high-speed spin cycle motor draws 10 to 15 amps at peak. A heated wash cycle adds the heating element load of 10 to 13 amps on machines with internal water heating, though most US machines rely on the home water heater rather than an internal element. The combination of these loads on a shared circuit risks nuisance tripping and can stress the circuit conductors over time.

Front-Load vs Top-Load Electrical Requirements

Both front-load and top-load washing machines connect to the same 120-volt, 20-amp, dedicated circuit. The wiring requirement does not change based on washer type. High-efficiency front-load machines often draw slightly less current than conventional top-loaders because their direct-drive or variable-speed motors operate more efficiently, but both types still require the dedicated 20-amp circuit per NEC 210.11(C)(2). Some washer-dryer combination units (all-in-one machines) require 240-volt connections if the drying function uses an electric heating element, in which case 10/3 NM-B on a 30-amp circuit applies instead.

GFCI Requirement for Laundry Circuits

NEC 2023 requires GFCI protection for receptacles in laundry areas. This requirement applies to new installations and circuits that are modified. GFCI protection can be provided by a GFCI breaker at the panel or a GFCI outlet at the laundry receptacle location. A GFCI breaker covers the entire circuit and is the cleaner solution when the panel is accessible. A GFCI outlet at the receptacle provides protection at the point of use and is appropriate when adding GFCI to an existing circuit.

Routing the Cable

Route the 12/2 NM-B cable from the 20-amp single-pole breaker at the panel through the wall or framing to the laundry area outlet location. Install a standard 20-amp NEMA 5-20R receptacle (the outlet with one T-shaped slot) rather than a standard 15-amp NEMA 5-15R outlet. The 20-amp outlet slot configuration visually confirms the circuit is 20 amps and prevents plugging in a 20-amp rated appliance cord into a 15-amp outlet by mistake.
