Correct Wire Size for a 50 Amp Circuit

A 50-amp circuit requires a minimum of 6 AWG copper wire or 4 AWG aluminum wire. This is based on NEC Table 310.16 for conductors rated at 60 degrees Celsius in standard residential installations. Using wire smaller than these minimums on a 50-amp breaker is a code violation, a fire hazard, and can damage the connected equipment.

Common 50-Amp Circuit Applications

50-amp circuits serve the largest dedicated loads in residential electrical systems. The most common applications include electric ranges and ovens (50A/240V, typically using 6/3 NM-B or 6/3 SER cable), electric cooktops (50A/240V), large sub-panel feeds (50A/240V feeder to a detached garage or workshop sub-panel), Level 2 electric vehicle (EV) charger circuits (some EV chargers require a 50-amp circuit, though many operate on 40-amp circuits), and welder outlets in home workshops (50A/240V NEMA 6-50 receptacle).

Cable and Wire Type Options

For Indoor Runs

Use 6/3 NM-B (Romex) with ground for indoor wiring through walls and ceilings. The 6/3 designation means 6 AWG gauge, 3 insulated conductors (two hots and a neutral), plus a bare ground. This is the standard cable for electric range circuits. If the circuit serves a 240V-only load with no neutral requirement, 6/2 NM-B with ground is sufficient.

For Service Entrance and Panel Feeds

SER (Service Entrance Round) cable in 6/3 configuration is commonly used for sub-panel feeds and appliance connections that run exposed or through conduit. SER cable has a round profile and is easier to route through tight spaces than flat NM-B cable.

For Underground and Outdoor

Use 6/3 UF-B cable for direct burial or individual 6 AWG THWN-2 conductors in PVC conduit. Direct burial UF-B must be installed at a minimum depth of 24 inches (or 18 inches if in PVC conduit).

For Conduit Installations

Pull individual 6 AWG THHN/THWN-2 conductors through EMT, PVC, or flexible conduit. You need three insulated conductors (two hots and a neutral for 120/240V circuits) plus a ground. The ground conductor for a 50-amp circuit must be at least 10 AWG copper per NEC Table 250.122.

Voltage Drop on Long Runs

For 50-amp circuits, voltage drop becomes a concern on runs exceeding approximately 80 to 100 feet. At 100 feet on 6 AWG copper at 50 amps (240V), the voltage drop is approximately 3.1%, which is at the edge of the NEC recommendation. For runs of 100 to 150 feet, upgrading to 4 AWG copper or 2 AWG aluminum brings the voltage drop below 3% and ensures the connected appliance receives adequate voltage. For a 50-amp EV charger circuit in a detached garage 120 feet from the main panel, 4 AWG copper is the practical choice.

50-Amp Breaker Type

A 50-amp residential circuit uses a double-pole 50-amp breaker in a 240V configuration. The breaker occupies two spaces in your electrical panel. Make sure your panel has available capacity for a double-pole breaker before planning a new 50-amp circuit. If the panel is full, your electrician may need to install tandem breakers in eligible slots or upgrade to a larger panel.
