The Mounting Pad

The two standard options are a poured concrete pad (typically 4 inches thick, reinforced, extending 2 to 3 inches beyond the generator footprint on all sides) or a pre-formed composite pad designed for the specific generator model. Composite pads are lighter, resist cracking in freeze-thaw cycles, and eliminate the concrete curing time. Both options provide the stable, level surface the generator requires.
Maintenance Access
Leave at least 3 feet of clearance on the service side of the generator (typically the side with the control panel and oil fill) for routine maintenance. Technicians need room to open the enclosure, change oil and filters, inspect components, and perform annual service. Tight installations against walls or fences may look cleaner but create headaches for every future service visit.

Some HOAs have specific rules about generator placement, visibility, noise, and screening requirements.
