When sizing a standby generator, the fundamental decision is whether to power your entire home or only a selected group of essential circuits. Both approaches provide meaningful outage protection, but they deliver very different experiences during an extended power outage and carry different price points. What Essential Circuits Coverage Means
An essential-circuits installation uses a smaller generator (typically 10kW to 16kW) paired with a load-managed transfer switch. The homeowner or electrician identifies the circuits most critical during an outage: the furnace, the refrigerator, a few lighting circuits, the sump pump, select outlets, and possibly the well pump. The generator and load-managed switch work together to power these circuits automatically while cycling non-essential circuits off when the total demand approaches the generator capacity.
The practical experience is that most household functions work during the outage, but some things do not: central air conditioning may be excluded if the generator is too small to handle the compressor, the electric range and electric dryer may be unavailable, electric vehicle charging is typically excluded, and some outlets in various rooms may not be powered. A whole-house installation uses a 22kW or larger generator paired with a 200-amp whole-house automatic transfer switch. The generator connects to the entire 200-amp service entrance and powers every circuit in the home simultaneously. Your life during the outage is essentially unchanged: the HVAC runs normally, the refrigerator and freezer maintain temperature, every outlet in every room has power, the electric range works, and you can run the washer and dryer. There is no load management, no circuit prioritization, and no behavioral adjustment needed.
The Price Difference Is Smaller Than Most Buyers Expect
The equipment cost difference between a 14kW essential-circuits installation and a 22kW whole-house installation is typically $1,500 to $3,000 in generator equipment. The installation labor cost is nearly identical for both configurations because the electrical work (ATS installation, panel connection, generator wiring) is fundamentally the same regardless of generator size. When buyers discover that whole-house coverage costs only $1,500 to $3,000 more than partial coverage for a system that will be in place for 20 to 25 years, the calculation almost always favors whole-house.

When Essential Circuits Makes Sense
There are genuine cases where essential-circuits coverage is the appropriate choice. A very tight installation budget where the difference matters significantly. A small home or cottage where the total electrical demand is modest and 14kW genuinely covers everything that matters. A rental property or vacation home where only basic habitability during an outage is the goal. An existing installation where upgrading from a smaller generator is being deferred for a future phase.
