Excavate to required depth: Trench to 24 inches minimum depth for the cable cover (which means the trench bottom is 24 inches plus cable diameter below grade). For cold-climate installations, excavate below local frost line. Maintain consistent depth throughout the run; depth variations create stress points where the cable may be damaged by ground movement.
Place sand or compacted soil bedding: A 2 to 4 inch layer of sand or fine soil bedding at the bottom of the trench provides cushioning that protects the cable from sharp rocks or debris in the surrounding soil. This is particularly important in rocky or coarse-grained soil environments.
Lay the cable in gentle curves: Do not pull the cable taught against trench walls or sharp corners. Lay the cable with gentle slack so that ground settling over time does not stress the cable. At trench endpoints where the cable transitions to above-ground installations, provide service loops to accommodate future ground movement.
Transition to physical protection above grade: Where the Southwire 14/2 UF-B emerges from the ground at structure walls or device locations, the cable must transition into rigid metal conduit or equivalent physical protection. This protects the cable from being damaged by tools, equipment, or weather at the vulnerable transition point. The conduit transition typically extends from below grade to at least 8 feet above grade or into a protective enclosure.
Install warning tape if required: Some jurisdictions require buried electrical warning tape installed at 12 inches below grade (above the cable but well below the surface) to alert future excavators to the presence of electrical cable. Verify local requirements before backfill.
Backfill carefully: Cover the cable with a 6-inch layer of sand or fine soil, then backfill the remaining trench depth with native soil compacted in 4-inch lifts. Avoid using soil with large rocks or sharp debris in the initial backfill layer above the cable. Final grade should match the surrounding surface elevation.
Test before final backfill: Verify the circuit operates correctly before final backfill. Test for proper continuity, correct polarity, and GFCI operation. Once the trench is backfilled, repairs are significantly more expensive. The test step adds minimal time and prevents many post-install issues.
