Every Generac standby generator includes an automatic weekly exercise cycle that runs the engine for a preset period to keep it ready for service. This self-test is one of the most important reliability features of a standby generator. A generator that sits idle for weeks or months without running can develop starting problems from stale oil on cylinder walls, a discharged battery, and moisture buildup in the exhaust system. The exercise cycle prevents all of these issues by running the generator on a regular schedule without any action from you.

How the Exercise Cycle Works

During installation, your electrician or you set a preferred day and time for the weekly exercise. Common settings are a weekday midmorning (such as Wednesday at 10:00 AM) when the brief engine noise is least disruptive. At the programmed time, the generator controller starts the engine automatically and runs it for 12 minutes in standard mode or approximately 20 minutes if the “exercise with transfer” option is selected. After the exercise period, the engine shuts down and the system returns to standby mode.

Exercise Without Transfer (Standard)

In standard exercise mode, the generator starts and runs at no load for 12 minutes. Your home remains on utility power throughout. The purpose is to circulate oil through the engine, charge the battery, verify the engine starts reliably, and burn off any moisture in the exhaust system. This is the most common exercise setting and is virtually unnoticeable inside the house since the engine is running without load.

Exercise With Transfer

In “exercise with transfer” mode, the generator starts, and after a brief warm-up period, the transfer switch moves your home from utility to generator power. The generator runs under actual load for the exercise period, then transfers back to utility and shuts down. This option provides a more comprehensive test because it verifies the entire system (generator, transfer switch, and electrical connections) under real operating conditions. Some homeowners prefer this option for the added confidence that every component is tested weekly.

Why the Exercise Cycle Matters

A standby generator may sit idle for weeks or months between outages. Without regular exercise, engine oil drains from cylinder walls and upper engine components, creating dry-start conditions that accelerate wear. The starting battery slowly discharges from the generator control board draw, potentially dropping below the voltage needed to crank the engine. Moisture condenses inside the exhaust system and engine block, which can cause corrosion over time. Fuel system components can develop deposits or blockages from prolonged inactivity.

The weekly exercise cycle prevents all of these issues. When a real outage occurs at 2 AM during a storm, you need the generator to start immediately and run perfectly. The exercise cycle ensures that it will because the engine, battery, and control systems have been verified within the last 7 days.

Setting and Adjusting the Schedule

The exercise day and time are set through the generator control panel. Your installer typically programs the initial schedule during commissioning, but you can adjust it at any time using the control panel buttons. Choose a time when the brief engine noise will not disturb you, your family, or your neighbors. Avoid scheduling during very early morning or late evening hours. What If the Exercise Cycle Fails?

Any exercise failure should be addressed promptly by checking the fault code, verifying fuel supply, and calling a service technician if needed. Addressing failures between outages is far better than discovering a problem during an emergency.

Fuel Usage During Exercise

The exercise cycle consumes a small amount of fuel. A 22kW Guardian running a standard 12-minute no-load exercise uses approximately 0.3 to 0.5 gallons of propane or the natural gas equivalent. Over a full year (52 weekly exercises), total exercise fuel consumption is approximately 15 to 25 gallons of propane.
